AUSTRALIAN EMBASSY TO INDONESIA
IN 1935 AUSTRALIA opened its first Trade Office in Batavia, now a suburb of Jakarta, when Indonesia was ruled by Holland as the Netherlands East Indies (NEI). The Austrade office was closed shortly before the NEI surrendered to invading Japanese military forces on 8 March 1942.
Near the end of World War 2, with Japan's unconditional surrender imminent, Indonesian leaders Sukarno and Mohammed Hatta proclaimed the independence of the Republic of Indonesia on 17 August 1945. Australia announced de facto recognition of the Republic of Indonesia on 9 July 1947 and de jure recognition on 27 December 1949.
Mr John Hood was appointed Australia's first Ambassador to Indonesia in April 1950 and moved immediately to Jakarta. The Austrade office reopened that year and Mr G S Anderson was appointed Trade Commissioner in September 1951.
The current Australian Ambassador to Indonesia is Ms Penny Williams who presented
her credentials to President Joko Widodo on 1 September 2021. A career diplomat, she previously served as High Commissioner to Malaysia (2007-10) and Global Ambassador for Women and Girls (2011-13) and her most recent position within the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade was as its Deputy Secretary for Services Delivery. Ms Williams speaks fluent Indonesian and holds a Bachelor of Asian Studies (Honours) focused on Indonesia, and a Masters of Applied Anthropology and Participatory Development.

INDONESIA AUSTRALIA BUSINESS COUNCIL
Founded in 1989, the IABC provides a "convivial networking" environment for business people of all nationalities involved or interested in business between Indonesia and Australia.
The IABC's chairman must be an Indonesian citizen and its board must have equal numbers of Indonesians and Australians. The Indonesian board members also represent the Australia New Zealand Committee of KADIN, the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
As such, IABC is not a foreign commercial chamber and does not represent Australian companies or specifically Australian business. "Hard-core lobbying is left to specialist business groups, supported by the Embassy" and inquiries from new Australian companies in Indonesia are directed to private advisers.
Rather, the IABC is an organisation in which Australians can "foster friendship" with interested Indonesians and have a "direct say" in the excellent social events it holds in Jakarta and the cities of Surabaya, Yogyakarta and Semarang and Bali province.
